Calligraphy

Let me be direct with you, I love letters!  I love the value and impact that letters, words and phrases can have on our lives.  Where would we be without our alphabet?  How else have we been able to pass on information for centuries?  For if so much of the words and learning of the past had not been written down, we would not be where we are today.  And to be able to present words that have given us life in a lively and beautiful way, what better combination could there be?

And yet, while the printing press and computer can now pass on necessary information, those vehicles still cannot capture the beauty and life that comes from the handwritten letter.  The handwritten letter in all its perfection and imperfection reflects our human experience, with both moments of success and moments of failure and the richness that comes through experiencing both.

My 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Simpson, introduced me to calligraphy way back when.  I dabbled for years, went on to the University of Notre Dame where I received my B.A. in government with a peace studies concentration.  Worked at a disarmament think tank in Cambridge, Massachusetts and even directed a small grassroots peace organization in the Chicago suburbs.  The shift came in a move to Wisconsin where I took Reggie Ezell’s year-long course in calligraphy.  I had no idea of the possibilities and depth of the calligraphic field until I experienced his class.  With all there is to learn, I know I will always feel challenged on this path I’ve chosen.

When the opportunity (or was it necessity?) arose, I committed myself full-time to calligraphy in 1998, opening my own studio in Highland Park, Illinois.  I moved to Connecticut in the spring of 2001 committed to doing more creative calligraphic work.  I have continued the long, ever exciting journey to learning more about my craft by studying under other calligraphic lights such as Brody Neuenschwander, Carl Rohrs, Diane Von Arx, Gwen Weaver, Eliza Holliday and many others.  In addition, now I am honored to pass my skills on through teaching others during classes taught here in my studio, public demonstrations and guest teaching assignments at schools.

A sampling of my work is available on my website: www.letteringdesign.com.
