Dafna Stearns My journey in making jewelry is similar to that of sculpture making. Working with sterling silver, along with other metals and gems, starts with an inspiration of a shape or a color. First, I saw the desired shape out of a plain sheet of metal and texture it, with tools such as hammers, special shape stamps, or rolling it through the rolling mill. This will determine the mood of the piece. The next step is to give the piece its 3D form. Using doming tools like hydraulic press or dapping and forming stakes and blocks, the flat piece of metal will transform into a 3 dimensional piece of jewelry. Adding the gems is the next step. Soldering the bezel onto the base will add yet another dimension. Often the gem will become the focal point of the piece and the silver would enhance its shape. After all the components fit to my satisfaction, it will be time to polish and smooth the piece of jewelry. Choosing the finish look will determine the final appearance that I want to achieve. With so many finishing options like shiny, matte, or my favorite, the old world look, the jewelry is almost complete. Often, I will hang the finished product on a chain that I handmade especially for it, to give the final piece of jewelry, a high quality, rich look. Enhancing the creative process and applying skills that I have learned over many years is my true passion. I sincerely enjoy the transformation that takes place from the beginning to the final and original piece of jewelry.
